Art in Politics


Art is an effective tool to communicate, but what it communicates actually depends on the viewer.  Study the image to the left and think about it's political impact.  Why do you think the artist created this artwork?

It is actually formally titled 'Rosie the Riveter' by artisit J. Howard Miller and is located in the National Museum of American History.

Study the image and utilize the D.A.I.E. process to critique the artwork.

Describe: Provide objective details and discuss the Elements of Art utilized (color, shape, space, line, form texture, value).
Analyze: Discuss how the artwork is organized and what Principles of Design are utilized (balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, unity, movement, pattern, and proportion too).
Interpret: What do you think the artist was thinking, feeling, or wanting to communicate?  How do you feel when you look at the artwork?  What do you think about when you view it?  What do think was/is the political impact of the artwork?
Evaluate: What is your final judgment?  Do you think this artwork has a purpose?  Is it valuable...why?

ASSIGNMENT:
In 4-5 complete sentences, post your comment/critique of this artwork using the D.A.I.E. process.  Make sure to include your thoughts about the image's political impact in your critique.

Posted comments will be reviewed on Tuesday, 9/12 by noon and will be evaluated based on participation and your understanding of the critique process.  Late assignments accepted based on normal practice for art class.  Notify Ms. Miller a minimum of 3 days prior to assignment due date if you are having difficulty completing assignment.
